Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the internship, candidates must have an undergraduate degree and be enrolled in a full-time graduate study program (pursuing a master’s degree or PhD with plans to return to school full-time). There is no age limit, and fluency in English is required. Knowledge of additional languages, such as French, Spanish, Russian, Arabic, Portuguese, and Chinese, is desirable. Other skills, including computing skills, are advantageous.

Internship Details

Internships are available in various fields, including economics, finance, human development, social sciences, agriculture, environment, engineering, urban planning, natural resources management, private sector development, and more. The positions are based on business needs and are primarily located in Washington, DC, with some opportunities in World Bank country offices.

Interns receive an hourly salary, and for applicable cases, there is a travel allowance of up to USD 3,000 at the discretion of the manager. Accommodations are the responsibility of the interns.

Application Process

All applications must be submitted online during the respective application period, and applications by email are not accepted. J1 visa holders need to obtain a G4 visa abroad before starting employment or an unpaid internship at the World Bank.

The application process includes a checklist to ensure a smooth experience. Applicants should use specified browsers, register with a valid email address, and upload necessary documents, including a Curriculum Vitae (CV), Statement of Interest, and Proof of Enrollment in a graduate degree.

Selection Process

After the application period closes, qualified applicants’ profiles are shared with World Bank operations and business units. Interviews follow, and the selection process concludes with the announcement of the new BIP cohort in early May.
