The Nigerian Institution of Environmental Engineers has said it will contribute to the Federal Government’s efforts to plant 25 million trees across the country.

A statement on Monday said the National Chairman of NIEE, Olalekan Ajani, stated this during a media parley to mark the World Environment Day in Lagos.

Ajani pointed out that the ‘Ecosystem Restoration’ initiative would undo the effects of deforestation across the country and boost environmental development.

He said, “The NIRR will contribute to the Nigerian Government’s commitment to plant 25 million trees to mitigate the effects of climate change and ensure  zero tolerance for illegal felling of trees and deforestation.”

He added, “Environmental engineers are ready as partners to create the conditions needed for ecosystem restoration and recovery; recovery can be as simple as removing an invasive species, reintroducing a lost species, a lost function; or as complex as altering landforms, changing the hydrology.”
