EXHORTATION

WHAT IS DEPRESSION?

A mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest in your day-to-day activities, making you feel as if life isn’t worth living.

1.DEPRESSION IS A NEGATIVE SPIRIT

3. SYMPTOMS OF DEPRESSION

  • Psalm 34 v 17 & 18 (NIRV)

v17 “Godly people cry out, and the Lord hears them. He saves them from all their troubles.”

v18 “The Lord is close to those whose hearts have been broken. He saves those whose spirits have been crushed.”

  1. Feeling sad or having an unhappy mood.
  2. Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed.
  3. Changes in Appetite – Weight loss or gain unrelated to dieting
  4. Having trouble sleeping or sleeping too much.
  5. Loss of energy or increased fatigue.
  6. Feeling worthless or guilty.
  7. Difficulty thinking, concentrating or making decisions.
  8. Thoughts of death or suicide.
  9. Increase in purposeless physical activity (e.g. nail-biting, hand wriggling, etc.), slowed movements, and speech (actions observable by others).
  10. Feeling miserable and lonely.
  11. Hating everyone around you.
  12. Thinking no one cares for you.
  13. Your line of reasoning is distorted.
  14. Frequent Agitation, Restlessness, and Irritation.
  15. Self-hatred, feeling guilty, feeling worthless.
  16. Inactivity, wanting to be alone, hyperactivity, wanting to be everywhere.
  17. Unreasonable quietness, extreme sadness, mourning and grieving, anxieties and worries, torments and sudden panics, troubled hearts and nagging, mind trouble and mental torture.

4.  PEOPLE IN THE BIBLE WHO WENT THROUGH DEPRESSION AND WERE DELIVERED

1. ELIJAH  –  1 Kings 19 v 3 – 5

v.3 “And when he saw that, he arose, and went for his life, and came to Beersheba, which belongeth to Judah, and left his servant there.”

v.4 “But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.”

v.5 “And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat.”

2. JONAH   –  Jonah 4 v 3 & 8

v.3 “Therefore now, O LORD, take, I beseech thee, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live.”

v.8 “And it came to pass, when the sun did arise, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and wished in himself to die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.”

3. JEREMIAH  –  Jeremiah 20 v 1 – 17  (14, 15 & 17)

v.14 “Cursed be the day wherein I was born: let not the day wherein my mother bare me be blessed.”

v.15 “Cursed be the man who brought tidings to my father, saying, A man child is born unto thee; making him very glad.”

v.17 “Because he slew me not from the womb; or that my mother might have been my grave, and her womb to be always great with me.”

4. JOB   –  Job 6 v 9

 “Even that it would please God to destroy me; that he would let loose his hand, and cut me off!

5. HANAH  –  1 Samuel 1 v 15

6. HAGAR  –  Gen. 21 v 16

v.11 “And they said unto Moses, Because there were no graves in Egypt, hast thou taken us away to die in the wilderness? wherefore hast thou dealt thus with us, to carry us forth out of Egypt?”

5. BIBLICAL TREATMENT FOR DEPRESSION

  • Prov. 12 v 25

“Heaviness in the heart of man maketh it stoop: but a good word maketh it glad.”

  • Depression is a spirit; it must be fought with the word of God.
  • These scriptures on depression will give you hope and build your faith.
  • Confess and meditate on them to win the fight against depression.
  • Meditate and keep confessing these scriptures

“Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.”

  • Rom. 8 v 28

“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”

“Casting all your care upon him; for he cares for you.”

6. HOW TO OVERCOME DEPRESSION

  1. MEDITATE ON GOD’S WORD
    1. Paste God’s words on your walls.
    1. Put them on your phone, iPad, etc.
    1. Confess the word as you are hearing.
    1. Don’t keep quiet.
    1. It may be difficult to open the Bible, but the ones pasted or loaded will minister to you.
  • LISTEN TO WORSHIP SONGS
    • In your car, at home, in your office.
    • In the kitchen.
    • Create an atmosphere for Miracles through Christian Music.
  • LISTEN TO MESSAGES
    • From your Pastor and other anointed Men and Women.
  • PRAYER – 1 Sam. 1 v 10

“And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed unto the LORD, and wept sore.”

  • It might be difficult, Pray in the spirit.
    • Listen to PRAYER TAPES.
    • Have a prayer partner you trust.
  • PRAISE GOD – Isaiah 61 v 3

“To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.”

  • Beauty for ashes
    • Oil of Joy for Mourning.
    • The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness.
  • EXERCISE – 1 Tim. 4 v 8

“For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.”

  • Let’s enjoy the little profit
    • Walking round your room, house, street or estate.
    • Jogging
    • Going to the Gym
    • Learn to swim (don’t be afraid)
  • VENTILATE YOUR ROOM
    • Allow natural light into the House
    • First thing in the morning, open your window curtains and let in Natural light.
    • This will help lift up your spirit.
    • Lay your bed.
    • Perfume it.
    • Look at yourself in the mirror and say to yourself “Wole Oladiyun, you are handsomely and wonderfully made by God. You are too unique. God favours you. You are a good boy, etc.
  • COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS – Psalm 107 v 8 – 9

v8 “Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!”

v9 “For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.”

  16. I am free from depression by the grace of God in Jesus name.
