US Warns Citizens of Possible Terrorist Threat against Its Schools, Facilities in Nigeria

The United States embassy in Nigeria has warned of a possible terrorist threat targeting US facilities and US-affiliated schools in the country.

In a security alert issued on March 9, the US mission in Nigeria advised American citizens to exercise increased vigilance when visiting its diplomatic facilities and affiliated institutions.

“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja informs U.S. citizens of a possible terrorist threat against U.S. facilities and U.S. affiliated schools in Nigeria,” the advisory reads.

The mission urged American nationals to take additional precautions when travelling to US diplomatic premises in the country.

“The Embassy recommends that U.S. citizens take additional precautions when traveling to the U.S. Embassy, the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos, and U.S. affiliated schools, to include varying times and routes,” the embassy said.

The embassy advised citizens to increase awareness of their surroundings and avoid predictable routines.

It also urged nationals to review their personal security arrangements with family members.

Among the safety measures listed were maintaining a low profile, staying alert in public places, and avoiding crowds and demonstrations.

The embassy also advised citizens to keep their mobile phones charged and familiarise themselves with emergency exits when entering buildings.

The mission said the consular sections of the embassy in Abuja and the consulate general in Lagos remain open.

The embassy urged US citizens to monitor its official website for further updates on the situation.

It also encouraged travellers to enrol in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive security updates.
