Troops of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) have recovered a large cache of 12.7mm ammunition in the Bulumkutu railway area of Maiduguri, Borno state.
According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication, the discovery followed intelligence-led operations and cordon-and-search activities aimed at curbing criminal and terrorist activities in the region.
Security sources said the recovery happened around 3:00 pm on Friday after residents reported suspicious metallic objects inside a drainage channel.
Military personnel, supported by police explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) teams, secured the area and conducted a thorough search of the drainage channel.
They recovered 1,270 rounds of 12.7mm ammunition, including live rounds and power banks concealed in the channel.
The publication said preliminary actions were taken to secure the site while efforts continued to drain water from the channel to check for more hidden items.
Troops, alongside police and other security agencies, have maintained a strong presence in the area to protect residents and critical infrastructure and to prevent any attempts by criminals or terrorists to reclaim the recovered ammunition.
Makama said there were no casualties or unusual incidents reported during the operation, and the security situation remains calm but under close watch.
The military urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to security agencies, noting that community support is vital for maintaining peace and security in the north-east.
