President Bola Tinubu says criticism of the Electoral Act by the opposition is great disservice to Nigerians.
Speaking at the national convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abuja on Friday, the president noted that the law went through rigorous and extensive legislative scrutiny before passage.
He said the reforms are part of efforts to strengthen the country’s democratic institutions.

The president pledged continued adherence to the rule of law while promising credible elections and protection of electoral integrity.
“While we welcome criticism, the constant attacks by opposition groups on the Electoral Act 2026 are a disservice to the Nigerian people,” Tinubu said.
“It is public knowledge that the process leading to the amendment of the 2022 electoral law passed through the crucible of legislative scrutiny, including public hearing.
“The Electoral Act was passed by overwhelming majority of members of the national assembly elected by the Nigerian people in accordance with the 1999 constitution as amended.
“The Act reflects our collective crest as a nation to strengthen our electoral system and consolidate democratic rule.
“Therefore, our commitment is to uphold the rule of law, conduct credible elections, protect the integrity of our elections, and continue to be a stronger, secure, and united country.”
In February, Tinubu signed the Electoral Act 2026 (Amendment) Bill into law.
The development followed the passage of the legislation by the national assembly after months of debate, review and amendments by both chambers.
Tinubu commended the national assembly for the “solid brainstorming discussions” aimed at strengthening national development and safeguarding democratic stability.
