Soludo Appoints New CMD for Ojukwu Varsity Teaching Hospital

Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has approved the appointment of Dr Maureen Umeakuewulu as the new Chief Medical Director of the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku, Anambra State.

According to a statement issued by the governor’s Press Secretary, Christian Aburime, on Friday, the appointment takes effect immediately.

The statement read, “The Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has approved the appointment of Dr Maureen Umeakuewulu as the new Chief Medical Director of the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku, Anambra State.

“Umeakuewulu is a distinguished Nigerian physician and Senior Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist with a special focus on gynaecologic oncology and women’s health at the National Hospital, Abuja.

“She brings a wealth of clinical expertise and experience, having served at the National Hospital, Abuja, where she has made significant contributions to healthcare delivery in Nigeria.

“Umeakuewulu is a Fellow of the West African College of Surgeons, the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, and the International College of Surgeons.”

Umeakuewulu is a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist at the National Hospital, Abuja, with a professional focus on women’s reproductive health and gynaecologic oncology. She has been involved in research and public advocacy on cervical cancer prevention, human papillomavirus vaccination and other women-centred health issues.

She has also played leadership roles within the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria, where she served as President of the Federal Capital Territory chapter, advocating increased awareness and access to screening and treatment for diseases affecting women, including breast and cervical cancer.

Beyond hospital practice, Umeakuewulu has been active in community health interventions through initiatives such as the Dona-Maureen Foundation, which has organised medical outreach programmes providing free healthcare services to underserved communities in Anambra State.

Her work has focused on improving access to reproductive healthcare, promoting early detection of cancers affecting women and strengthening community health education on gender-based violence and harmful cultural practices.
