Nutrition experts have warned that going to bed immediately after consuming heavy meals can disrupt digestion and increase the risk of obesity, heartburn, choking, and long-term health complications.

Speaking to PUNCH Healthwise, former President of the Nutrition Society of Nigeria, Prof. Wasiu Afolabi, explained that lying down right after eating interferes with the body’s natural digestive process.

⚠️ What Happens When You Sleep Immediately After Eating?

According to experts:

 • Digestive juices may flow back into the upper digestive tract, causing heartburn and chest inflammation.

 • Undigested food can ferment in the stomach, leading to bloating, belching, and discomfort.

 • There is a risk of choking, as food may not follow the proper digestive pathway during sleep.

 • Excess calories consumed at night are more likely to be stored as abdominal fat (central obesity).

Prof. Afolabi, a Community Nutrition expert at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, explained:

“Over time, repeated heavy meals at night without proper digestion can contribute to being overweight because the energy from the food is not utilised through activity or exercise.”

🕒 How Long Should You Wait Before Sleeping?

Experts recommend:

 • At least 2–3 hours after a large mixed meal (carbohydrates + proteins).

 • At least 1 hour after light snacks.

 • Ideal dinner time: 6 p.m. – 7 p.m., allowing the body enough time to digest before bedtime.

Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Akinlolu Solape of the Lagos State Health Service Commission also cautioned that forcing the body to digest heavy meals while at rest increases the risk of long-term systemic harm.

 • Take a short walk after eating
