Authorities in the Benin Republic have reportedly arrested Chabi Yayi, the son of former President and prominent opposition figure Thomas Boni Yayi.
The reported detention comes just one week after a failed military coup attempt rocked the West African nation, escalating political tensions in the region.
It was gathered that Chabi Yayi was reportedly detained at his home in the early hours of Sunday. Relatives confirmed the arrest but stated that no official reason has been given by the authorities.
“At this time, we don’t know what he is accused of,” one relative told the press.
“We don’t know if it is linked to the events of last Sunday,” said another close friend, a member of the Democrats party, the main opposition party, which Yahi heads.
The reported arrest of Yayi comes after several arrests have taken place since the December 7 putsch attempt.
They include alleged participants, the former minister of defence and key opposition figure, Candide Azannai.
Several of those who staged the failed coup, including their leader, Lieutenant Colonel Pascal Tigri, remain at large.
