Professor Oluwafemi Flora Tobolayefa has been appointed the new Vice-Chancellor of the Nigeria Maritime University (NMU), Okerenkoko. Her appointment marks a historic achievement, as she becomes the first female professor from the Gbaramatu Kingdom to lead the institution.

The announcement was made by Mr. Abdullahi Bardi, Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, during a briefing on Wednesday, June 18, 2025. According to him, the appointment followed a transparent and competitive selection process that began in March 2025 with a national call for applications. Out of twelve applicants, six candidates were shortlisted after a thorough screening and were interviewed by a six-member selection committee on June 17.
Professor Oluwafemi emerged as the top candidate with a score of 78.4%, standing out for her academic achievements, leadership skills, and experience. Her appointment was based purely on merit and guided by the statutory provisions that govern appointments in federal universities.

She is a seasoned microbiologist and respected academic who previously served as the Foundation Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) at NMU. Before that, she was Head of Department at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta. Her leadership style and dedication to academic excellence earned her the confidence of the Governing Council.
The Council expressed its gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his consistent support in strengthening the education and maritime sectors. It also acknowledged the contributions of the Minister of Education, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), and the National Assembly for their continued partnership and legislative support.
Mr. Bardi stated, “This appointment reflects the integrity of the process and our collective resolve to position the Nigeria Maritime University as a center of excellence in maritime education, research, and national development.”
The Council has called on staff, students, and members of the surrounding communities to give their full support to Professor Oluwafemi as she takes on this leadership role and guides the university into its next phase of development.
