A renowned professor of Medical and Pathogenic Microbiology, Prof. Adetoyosi Daniels, will deliver the 5th inaugural lecture of Achievers University, Owo, Ondo State on March 18, 2026.

Prof Daniels, a distinguished Nigerian microbiologist, educator, and academic leader, is the Provost of the College of Postgraduate Studies of the University.

The lecture, scheduled to commence at 2 pm, is titledThe Paradox of the Microbial Dance With Humanity and the Crises of Antibiotic Resistance.

Early Life and Education

Professor Adetoyosi Olutosin Daniels was born on March 6 in the late 1960s to the family of the late Chief David Adedimeji and Chief Mrs Adefunke Adewakun in Ile-Oluji, Ondo State. She is the second of five children and the first daughter. Her early education began at Ebun-Oluwa Nursery and Primary School in Ondo, followed by the Local Authority Primary School in Ile-Oluji. She attended Gboluji Anglican Grammar School, Ile-Oluji, where she obtained her WAEC certificate.

Academic Qualifications and Research

Professor Daniels continued her education at the then Ondo State University, Ado-Ekiti (now Ekiti State University), earning her B.Sc., M.Sc., and PhD in Microbiology. Her doctoral research focused on antimicrobial resistance and alternatives to conventional antibiotics, culminating in her thesis, Antimicrobial Properties of Piliostigma reticulatum and Cleistopholis patens. She published more than seven articles based on this research. During her time in industry, she also produced academic publications, including pioneering work on the use of brewery waste for microbiological research.

Professional Career in Industry

After completing her youth service at International Breweries Plc, Ilesa, Professor Daniels was retained as Assistant Manager in recognition of her diligence and leadership. She worked at the company for over a decade and served as Secretary of the Senior Staff Association of the Food, Beverages, and Tobacco Association, representing staff in discussions with management.

Personal Journey and Family

Professor Daniels has demonstrated resilience throughout her life. She married Olukayode Daniels in 1998, but was widowed five years later, left to raise two young children, supported by family and destiny helpers, and most importantly, God. She balanced motherhood with academic pursuits. Today, she is both a proud mother and grandmother, exemplifying strength and determination in overcoming adversity.

Academic Leadership and Achievements

In 2014, Professor Daniels joined Achievers University, Owo, as a Lecturer II. Specialising in Medical and Pathogenic Microbiology, she teaches both undergraduate and postgraduate courses. She became the first female Acting Head of the Department of Biological Sciences, serving for two academic sessions, and later served as the first female Acting Dean of the College of Natural and Applied Sciences (2019–2023). Under her leadership, the department produced consecutive best graduating students, and the College organised two successful international science conferences in 2021 and 2023, attracting scholars and Vice Chancellors nationwide.

Distinguished Career and Research Contributions

Professor Adetoyosi Olutosin Daniels is recognised as a distinguished Nigerian microbiologist, educator, and academic leader. She earned her PhD in Microbiology from Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti, and progressed from Lecturer II in 2014 to full Professor in 2022 at Achievers University. She currently serves as Provost of the College of Postgraduate Studies.

Her teaching and research span medical microbiology, immunology, virology, parasitology, and public health. She has supervised numerous undergraduate and postgraduate projects, with a focus on antimicrobial resistance, microbial biotechnology, and infectious diseases. Her research contributions have been presented at national and international conferences, including the Nigerian Society for Microbiology, the Mycological Society of Nigeria, and Achievers University’s AUCONAS series.

Professor Daniels has held various leadership roles at Achievers University, including Acting Head of the Department of Biological Sciences (2017–2019), Acting Dean of the College of Natural and Applied Sciences (2019), Director of Research, Innovation and Linkages (2023–2024), and Provost of the College of Postgraduate Studies. In these positions, she coordinated academic programs, oversaw postgraduate policy, strengthened research collaborations, and advanced innovation within the institution.

Professional Development and Recognition

She has participated in numerous capacity-building trainings organised by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Virtual Institute for Capacity Building in Higher Education (VICBHE), including specialised training in CCMAS implementation, Moodle, and grant writing. Her dedication has been recognised with distinctions and awards such as “Best Lecturer” by the Microbiology Students’ Association (2021), “Dedicated Staff of Achievers University” (2022), and other commendations for excellence in academic administration.

Professor Daniels actively contributes to scholarly publishing, serving as Executive Editor of the Achievers Journal of Scientific Research and as a reviewer or editorial board member for several international journals. Service and Community Engagement

She is currently serving her second term on the Governing Council of Achievers University and has recently been nominated to the Governing Council of the Ile-Oluji Assembly in her hometown. She was also the pioneer secretary of GBOSA’84, an old students’ association of her alma mater. Fondly called Toyosi Daniels, she is known as an accommodating, friendly, yet highly principled academic with a strong sense of purpose. Notably, she hails from the Adewakun family of Ile-Oluji, Ondo State, and she is privileged to be the first in her family to attain the rank of Professor.
