Detectives have arrested a 35-year-old man, Eluyera Wasiu, for planning with one Adeniyi Samuel to assassinate his 29-year-old expectant wife.

Eluyera Wasiu contemplated using assassination to eliminate his wife and enlisted the help of Adeniyi Samuel after many attempts to kill his wife through food poisoning failed.

The wife, Bola Taiwo, through providence, had repeatedly declined to eat each food the husband bought for her from an eatery.

The plot to eliminate Bola leaked following a fierce fight between Wasiu and Adeniyi when Wasiu demanded a refund of money paid to Adeniyi for the planned assassination of the expectant wife since he (Adeniyi) was unable to execute the task.

It was learnt that passers-by who observed the fierce fight between the two young men at Oponuwa area of Ogijo on New Year Day, and afraid that it might lead to bloodshed, alerted the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Ogijo Divisional Headquarters to intervene.

The DPO Ogijo Division, Muhammed Baba, quickly mobilised detectives to the scene and arrested the two suspects.

The Police spokesman in Ogun State, Abimbola Oyeyemi, disclosed this to reporters in a statement yesterday. Oyeyemi, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said during interrogation, Adeniyi Samuel opened up and informed the police that Eluyera Wasiu contracted him to kill his expectant wife, one Bola Taiwo.

The suspect further stated that Eluyera Wasiu promised to give him N10, 000 for the job, out of which he had already given him N5, 000; promising to pay the balance on completion of the job.

However, preliminary investigation revealed that Wasiu Eluyera was married to Bola Taiwo but they got separated due to irreconcilable differences and Wasiu later got married to another woman who is currently living with him.

In a twist of fate, Wasiu met his former wife and they rekindled their love again and in the process, it resulted to pregnancy as they were seeing each other often.

The police spokesman stated that the suspect (Wasiu), not willing to upset his new wife, asked Bola Taiwo to terminate the pregnancy but Bola Taiwo declined.

“In his confessional statement, he stated that he had bought food for her twice from one eatery and laced the food with poison, but the lady, by providence, did not eat the food. It was when his personal efforts to kill her failed that he contracted Adeniyi Taiwo to help him eliminate her.

“When he didn’t carry out the assignment as agreed, he demanded the refund of the advance payment he made to him, and his refusal led to the fight which eventually led to their arrest,” Oyeyemi stated.

The Commissioner of Police, Lanre Bankole, has ordered a full-scale investigation of the case with the view to arraign the suspect in court.
