The Chairman of Jos South LGA, Silas Dung, confirmed the incident to The PUNCH in Jos.
He described the storm as extremely strong, noting that it uprooted all four columns holding the secretariat gatehouse and damaged houses in the community.
“For the storm to destroy the council secretariat gate built with 25mm rods tells you how powerful it must have been,” he said.
Dung, who visited the affected areas alongside officials from the National Emergency Management Agency, said about six houses were destroyed, while others had their roofs blown off and fences damaged.
“From what we can ascertain at the moment, six houses have been destroyed.

“We are still assessing other locations to determine the full extent of the damage,” he explained.
The chairman attributed the destruction to strong winds, describing the event as a natural disaster.
“This is a storm, a natural disaster, not man-made. There was nothing anyone could have done to prevent it.
“The local government is working to assess the damage and provide support to affected residents,” he added.
He assured residents that the council would take preventive measures to avoid further risks from the damaged structures.
“We are working to pull down the damaged parts of the secretariat gate to avert any further risk to the people,” Dung said.
Earlier this month, a severe rainstorm swept through Shimankar District in Shendam LGA, destroying at least 50 houses, including schools and places of worship.
