Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has stated that he can occupy the highest office in Nigeria.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, the two-term governor and prominent People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain said he would not rule out a future presidential ambition, though he emphasised that the decision would ultimately depend on the will of Nigerians and the direction of his party.

“I don’t have any doubt that I have the capacity to occupy the highest office in this land and I have what it takes,” Makinde stated.

However, the governor was quick to add that personal ambition must align with the collective interest of the people and the party.

“What I want to do right now, is it what Nigerians are asking for right now. Is it what my party will say we should do? We don’t know; We still have a long time to go,” he said.

Makinde also noted that ahead of the 2027 general elections, the political landscape would not simply be a contest between the PDP and the All Progressives Congress (APC), but between Nigerians and the ruling party.

According to him, the PDP must first put its house in order before any serious political aspirations can be discussed.

“But where we are right now is that we must fix our party, we must have a platform for you to even aspire to be anything.” he added.

In a reflective moment, the governor also said he would be content if his political journey ended at this point.

“Let me also say this: if my political journey ends here, I am also happy,” he added.
