The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, is dead.

He was aged 90 years.

TheNiche learnt the monarch, who ascended the throne in July 2024, died in the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2025 after spending a year on the throne.

Born on July 5, 1935, his death coming barely two days after celebrating his 90th birthday.

Oba Olakulehin received the staff of office from Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, on July 12, 2024, as the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland.

Oba Olakulehin ascended the throne from the chieftancy rung of Balogun Olubadan, following the demise of Oba (Dr.) Moshood Lekan Balogun, Alli Okunmade II, who died at the age of 81 years on March 14, 2024.

On Friday, President Bola Tinubu felicitated with Oba Akinloye Olakulehin, on his 90th birthday and the first anniversary of his coronation as the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland.

Tinubu conveyed his best wishes in a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, titled ‘President Tinubu celebrates Olubadan, Oba Akinloye Olakulehin at 90.’

The President said at 90, “His Majesty embodies the rare blend of age-old wisdom, service, and enduring leadership through decades of selfless dedication to nation-building and community development.”

“Your Imperial Majesty, Oba Olakulehin, as you mark nine decades of a life well lived in service, sacrifice, and stewardship, and on your first anniversary on the throne of your forefathers, we honour not only your longevity but also your immense contributions to community development and national unity.

“May your reign be peaceful, prosperous, and impactful,” the President said.

Tinubu joined the people of Ibadanland, the traditional institution, and all well-wishers across Nigeria and beyond in celebrating the remarkable life and legacy of a monarch whose reign has been characterised by wisdom, peace, and unwavering commitment to his people’s progress.

He described Oba Olakulehin as a foremost traditional ruler, custodian of culture and tradition, and a revered elder statesman who has devoted his life to serving humanity and preserving Yoruba tradition, identity, and values.

“President Tinubu prays for strength, grace, sound health, and a longer life for Kabiyesi, while his throne continues to symbolise peace, prosperity, and pride for generations to come,” Onanuga concluded.
