The Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) today conferred its Diamond Lifetime Achievement Award on Otunba the Ven. Olufemi Oyawale is an accomplished Public Relations practitioner who retired as the Information Attache to the Nigerian High Commission in the United Kingdom.

In a letter signed by Dr. Ike Neliaku, fnipr, President and Chairman of Council, the NIPR observed that Otunba the Ven Oyawale’s “commitment and dedication to excellence in service, in and outside government, has set a high standard for others to follow and significantly enhanced the reputation and practice of public relations as a leadership function”.

The award ceremony which was held on Thursday, June 27, 2024, at the Congress Hall of the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, was witnessed by national and international dignitaries including a former Nigerian Head of State, HE Gen. Dr. Yakubu Gowon, GCFR.

The Venerable Oyawale with one of his old students at the National Institute of Public Information, Kaduna, Mrs ‘Bunmi Badejo who is one of the scores of officers he brought into the NIPR. She is now a Fellow and National Council Member of the NIPR. She is a retired Director of Information.

Established in 1963 and chartered by Decree 16 of June 1, 1990 (now an Act of the National Assembly, cited as Cap. N114 Laws of the Federation, LFN 2024), the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) is the sole regulator of public relations in Nigeria. Over the past 60 years, it has demonstrated faith and commitment to the nation and provided strategic support towards national development.

Otunba the Venerable Olufemi Oyawale, retired, is one of the much-respected elders of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations. A distinguished Fellow of the NIPR since 1988, he was the first and only one in the Federal Ministry of Information for several years. He helped register over a hundred Information Officers, Public Relations Officers/Managers, and Publicity Officers in various Federal Government ministries, the NYSC, NICON, and the Nigerian. Army, the Nigerian Navy the Nigerian Television Authority, and Peugeot Automobiles of Nigeria with the NIPR.

From 1982-1989 he taught Public Relations and Journalism at the National Institute of Public Information, Kaduna where he also doubled as the Institute’s Public Relations Officer. He was Chairman of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, Kaduna State Chapter, and a Member of the NIPR National Council, 1985-1987. He served as the Diocesan Public Relations Officer of the old expansive Anglican Diocese of Kaduna, 1985-1989, and the Bishop of Kaduna’s Commissary in  London and Lagos, 1989- 1993.

He is a Recipient of the NIPR Presidential Award for Excellence in Public Relations, 1995. Otunba the Venerable Olufemi Oyawale was the Information Attaché (Senior Counsellor Grade) and Head of the Nigerian Information Services Centre at the Nigeria High Commission London, UK, May 1991-November 1993.

He was the pioneer Public Relations Lecturer at the College of Journalism, Fleet Street, London, 1975-1977, and became a Member of the Institute of Public Relations, London in 1978.

An author of 31 books and booklets, Otunba the Venerable Olufemi Oyawale Oyawale is a staunch member of the Jim’oko Ruling House of Ile-Oluji. He is 80 and a retired Anglican Archdeacon.
