Permanent Voters’ Cards

The Independent National Electoral Commission has announced that Nigerians will soon be able to register for both their National Identification Number (NIN) and voter cards at the same centres, as part of a new collaboration with the National Identity Management Commission.

INEC chairman Mahmood Yakubu revealed the development on Wednesday during a visit by NIMC’s management team to INEC headquarters, explaining that the partnership will allow citizens to complete both registration processes simultaneously.

“Citizens will therefore have the opportunity to register as voters while simultaneously registering for the NIN,” Yakubu said. “We welcome this partnership with NIMC, which is in keeping with our commitment to synergise with every national institution to strengthen electoral activities in Nigeria.”

Under the arrangement, NIMC officials will be deployed to continuous voter registration centres across the country to harmonise database collection between the two agencies.

Yakubu noted that both INEC and NIMC currently maintain Nigeria’s largest biometric databases and must work more closely together to strengthen electoral processes.

“Since the ultimate goal is to enrol every citizen with NIMC, we look forward to the day when your database will serve as the single source of truth for citizenship identification in Nigeria,” the INEC chairman said.

The collaboration builds on a successful pilot project conducted during the July 2025 continuous voter registration exercise in Anambra State, which NIMC participated in before the initiative’s planned nationwide expansion.

Yakubu suggested that such database integration could eventually allow Nigerians to vote from anywhere in the country, rather than being restricted to polling units where they initially registered.

INEC said NIMC will release details of the specific continuous voter registration centres where its staff will be deployed, along with the procedures for National Identification Number registration.
