French supermajor set to drill exploration probe close to its big Akpo field as it fine tunes Preowei development

TotalEnergies is gearing up to drill a deepwater exploration well in Nigeria, targeting a significant-sized prospect which, if successful, could be developed as a subsea satellite to one of its floating production, storage and offloading vessels.

The French giant is also fine tuning development studies on its big nearby Preowei subsea project, with a boost in reserves expected after studying the latest seismic data.

Deepwater exploration wells have been a rarity in Nigeria in recent years, so a high-profile supermajor being prepared to risk money on such a venture underscores how the progressive oil and gas policies of President Bola Tinubu are having a positive effect.
