A Nigerian-born, Professor Grace Chidozie Ononiwu, CBE, has become the 1st Black African to serve as Director-General (Legal Delivery) at the UK’s Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) — one of the most powerful legal offices in Britain.
She Qualified as a Solicitor in 1991
She Joined the CPS, rose to become Chief Crown Prosecutor — the first Black person ever to hold that post in 2005
She later became Chief Crown Prosecutor for East of England and West Midlands
She received OBE (2008) and CBE (2019) for services to Law and Order
She was visiting Professor at the University of Hertfordshire — where a building now bears her name
She’s named one of UK’s 100 Most Influential Black Britons and Women of the Year 2020
In June of 2025, Professir Ononiwu was appointed Director-General of Legal Delivery, CPS UK
Her rise from East London to the pinnacle of British justice is not just personal victory , it’s a symbol of what determination, integrity, and cultural pride can achieve.
