The Super Eagles of Nigeria held their nerve to secure a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Tanzania in their opening match at the Africa Cup of Nations on Tuesday.

The Eagles overcame a spirited Tanzanian challenge in a game filled with drama and momentum swings.

Nigeria began on the front foot, dominating possession and creating a flurry of early chances through Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman and Samuel Chukwueze.

The pressure eventually told in the 36th minute when Alex Iwobi delivered a pinpoint cross that Semi Ajayi met powerfully, heading past goalkeeper Zuberi Foba to give the Super Eagles a deserved lead.

Tanzania responded positively after the break and stunned the Super Eagles early in the second half. Charles M’Mombwa capitalised on a defensive lapse to fire home from close range in the 50th minute, drawing the East Africans level and briefly shifting the momentum.

The Super Eagles, however, regained control almost immediately. Just two minutes later, Lookman produced a moment of individual brilliance, weaving past defenders before unleashing a precise strike from the edge of the box that flew beyond Foba to restore Nigeria’s advantage.

The remainder of the contest saw Nigeria press for a third goal, with Osimhen and Iwobi both denied by fine goalkeeping, while Tanzania pushed forward bravely in search of a late equaliser.

Stanley Nwabali was called into action late on, confidently dealing with crosses and corners as Tanzania mounted sustained pressure in the closing minutes.

Despite having a goal disallowed for offside following a VAR review, the Super Eagles’ composure and attacking depth proved decisive as they managed the final stages to claim all three points.

The victory gives Nigeria a valuable early boost in group C, while Tanzania will take encouragement from their resilience and attacking intent as they look ahead to their remaining fixtures.
