London is heading for a heatwave as a plume of hot Mediterranean air wafts over the capital.

The Met Office reckon temperatures will reach 30C this week during a run of sizzling days.

In London, a heatwave is triggered when a location records at least three consecutive days where the daily maximum temperature meets or exceeds 28C.

That appears on the card towards the end of the week, where 28C or higher is predicted for at least four consecutive days – with a high of 30C on Thursday.

It means London is likely to be hotter than a number of southern European destinations including Barcelona and the Algarve.

BBC Weather is predicting two weeks of warm and sunny days with maximum daily temperatures no lower than 25C.

On X, @TheSnowDreamer posted a weather chart pointing to a heatwave in London in the second half of the week.

“Be prepared for it to become very warm/hot for a prolonged period,” the forecaster wrote.

On Saturday, central London saw temperatures rise to 24C after a band of thunderstorms swept south-east and eastern England, bringing more than 30,000 lightning strikes.

Sunday was expected to see similar highs before things start warming up even more as the working week begins.

The hot weather will delight the 200,000-or-so music fans heading to the Glastonbury Festival, which gets under way on Wednesday, June 25.
