Josh Acheampong’s stellar international break with the England Under-21s has presented Liam Rosenior with a timely solution to Chelsea’s centre-back issues.

Despite the woes of Cole Palmer, the international break was a success for Josh Acheampong and his Chelsea hopes. The 19-year-old played every minute of the double-header against Andorra and Moldova, serving as a composed anchor in a backline that conceded just once across 180 minutes.

In the first fixture, a 1-1 draw against Andorra, Acheampong’s recovery speed and aerial dominance were vital in stifling counter-attacks. He then followed this with an even more authoritative display in the 4-1 victory over Moldova, where his progressive passing helped England maintain a 74% possession rate.

It’s a different story at Chelsea, though, failing to appear in the last four Premier League games.

Josh Acheampong puts the pressure on Liam Rosenior

Chelsea’s centre-back crisis has Liam Rosenior scrambling for solutions after testing just about every combination under the sun.

Josh Acheampong has mostly been used at centre-back this season, making seven appearances in that position, which mostly came during Enzo Maresca’s reign.

However, Rosenior has opted for Acheampong to play at right-back of late, which hasn’t helped his cause, as he struggled against PSG.

But, his performances for England must make Rosenior reconsider his thinking, especially as he sees Acheampong as a long-term centre-back solution.

Why Josh Acheampong could be Chelsea’s solution

Offering a blend of physical dominance and technical composure that senior peers currently lack, it’s worth a gamble on the youngster.

Liam Rosenior’s new way of pressing has been undermined by individual errors, but Acheampong’s performances for England’s Under-21s proved he can control a high-line defense with maturity.

The 19-year-old is a hybrid defender. He ranks in the 99th percentile for successful take-ons and maintains a 93% pass completion rate, making him ideal for Rosenior’s build-up play.
