Some lawmakers have been arrested for questioning by the police over the ongoing speakership crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly.

The crisis escalated after more than 32 lawmakers signed a petition for the removal of former Speaker, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, citing allegations of misappropriation of funds, high-handedness, and other infractions.

Among those reportedly questioned by the police are Hon. Sylvester Ogunkelu (Epe 2) and Hon. Lanre Afinni (Lagos Island 2). While Ogunkelu was detained, Afinni was granted administrative bail on health grounds on Wednesday.

The Lagos Assembly has been embroiled in controversy since January 13, when Obasa was ousted as Speaker and replaced by his deputy, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, while he was away in the United States.

Obasa has since rejected his removal, arguing at a press conference that the lawmakers did not follow “constitutional processes.” However, the Assembly has stood by its decision, warning that any attempt to disrupt the legislature will be resisted by the majority of its members.
