The Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) marked a significant milestone, as the first cohort of students from its School of Anaesthetic Technology graduated, on Friday, 6th of December, 2024.  

In his address, the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Adetokunbo O. Fabamwo, lauded the pioneering graduates for their accomplishments, as he spoke about the school from its inception, which was inspired by a similar initiative at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH). He said, “the management of LASUTH recognized the hospital had the resources to establish a school of such repute independently, we took the bold step, and today, we celebrate its success.”

The CMD appreciated members of the hospital’s Top Management Committee for spearheading the initiative and highlighted their ongoing efforts to include Anaesthetic Technology as a recognized cadre in the Lagos State Government’s Scheme of Service. He assured the audience of encouraging progress.

Speaking to the graduates, Prof. Fabamwo said, “You are the pioneers of this institution at LASUTH, and your place in history is assured”, as he expressed pride in the graduates for their excellent performance during their training. He encouraged them to contribute meaningfully to the healthcare sector as he noted the high demand for Anaesthetic Technicians across Nigeria. He added, “this profession offers limitless opportunities, with no fear of unemployment.” 

The CMD also acknowledged the tireless contributions of Dr. Titilayo Awodesu, the Head of the School of Anaesthetic Technology, who ensured the program’s success through meticulous planning and regular updates. He congratulated the graduates’ families, recognizing their invaluable support.

Dr. Olusegun Ogboye, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Lagos State, was ably represented at the event by Mr. Tunde Oyefile, Director of Medical Services. In his remarks, Mr. Oyefile extended hearty congratulations to the pioneering graduates of the LASUTH School of Anaesthetic Technology. He commended their dedication and perseverance throughout the training program and wished them great success in their careers. “Your hard work has brought you to this moment of celebration, continue to strive for excellence as you contribute to the advancement of healthcare in Lagos State and beyond”, he said.

The Senior Special Assistant to the Lagos State Governor, on Health, Dr. Oluwatoni Adeyemi, welcomed the graduates into the “One Health Family In Lagos State”, saying, “Your role as an Anaesthetic Technicians is a very vital one, you serve as a bridge between your patients and the surgical team you will be working with.” She further encouraged them to take their work seriously and keep learning consistently.

Dr. John Oyebuchi, who is the Coordinator of the National Board of Technical Education, commended the hospital management for this great feat. He implored the graduands to not just be excellent in their skill but also in their attitude as well, while executing their jobs.

Akinyemi Ayisat Motunrayo, the overall best graduating student, delivered an inspiring valedictory speech, expressing gratitude to LASUTH management, her instructors, family, and colleagues. Quoting Winston Churchill, she said, “Success is not final, failure is not fatal; it is the courage to continue that counts.” She encouraged her fellow graduates to embrace lifelong learning and strive for excellence in their careers.
