The pair met during her first year at Queen’s University in Canada, where they both studied. The couple dated throughout the 1990s before tying the knot at the turn of the century. Their love survived Elon’s transfer to Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and a short-lived breakup after Justine graduated. Elon and Justine got married in January 2000 and got divorced eight years later, just as he became the CEO of Tesla. While recalling details of their marriage, she spoke to Marie Claire about their tumultuous divorce, saying: I trusted my husband. Why else had I married him? And I told myself it did not matter.
