Shooting Stars’ newcomer Tijani Al-Ameen has rapidly become one of the most talked-about defenders in his debut Nigeria Premier Football League season, earning praise for his composure, versatility, and commanding presence at the back.
The centre-back, who can also fill in as a defensive midfielder when called upon, has impressed both coach and fans with his proactive defending. He often steps forward to intercept or challenge attackers rather than sitting deep, a style that has disrupted opposition rhythm and helped his team retain stability.
“When I’m on the pitch, I want to be part of building from the back,” Al-Ameen told reporters. “I don’t just want to defend; I want to initiate attacks with accurate passing, help break lines, and ensure the team doesn’t crumble under pressure. Every match is a test, and so far, I’m enjoying passing them.”
His ball-playing ability has become a highlight: confident under pressure, willing to carry the ball forward, and delivering progressive passes or accurate cross-field balls to attackers. Those moments when he breaks defensive lines have not gone unnoticed.
In one-on-one situations, especially when the defensive line is high, Al-Ameen’s tactical awareness, combined with physical strength and bravery, has helped him come out on top. Aerial duels, too, have become one of his strengths, as he’s shown good timing and power in heading the ball clear.
“I’ve worked a lot on my tackling,” he said. “If I see a chance to win the ball cleanly, I take it. Even if I sometimes sacrifice a little risk, I believe the defensive line must be well-organised, but also brave enough to engage directly.”
While still early in his NPFL journey, Al-Ameen’s performances suggest he has a high ceiling. His composure under pressure—especially when distributing long passes from the back under pressing—shows a maturity beyond many defenders with similar experience.
As Shooting Stars push through the season, fans and analysts will be watching closely—because if his current form is anything to go by, Tijani Al-Ameen could become one of the premier defenders in Nigerian football.
