Abba Yusuf, governor of Kano, says his decision to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) is essential to positioning the state at the heart of national decision-making and securing a better future for citizens.

Speaking at the 2026 APC ‘grand rally’, at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano on Monday, Yusuf told thousands of supporters that Kano can no longer be sidelined from the centre.

He framed the decision as one of responsibility, not personal ambition, enabling active engagement with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and unlocking accelerated development through stronger federal ties.

“It is about placing Kano in a position where it can fully participate in national development and secure a better future for its citizens,” Yusuf said.

“With the support of our great party and the cooperation of the Federal Government, Kano State is better positioned to move forward with confidence and stability.”

The governor, who resigned from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in January amid internal crises and leadership dispute, thanked Vice-President Kashim Shettima for formally receiving him into the APC fold.

Other dignitaries present included governors of Jigawa, Sokoto, Kaduna, Katsina, Borno, Yobe, and Plateau.

Abdullahi Ganduje, former APC national chairman and ex-governor of Kano; and Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin were also present.

Nentawe Yilwatda, national chairman of the APC, described the turnout as a sign of unity and commitment to the party’s agenda and Tinubu’s vision.
