Nigerian passports

Succor may have come to thousands of Nigerians seeking to access the services the Nigerian High Commission in the United Kingdom, following the move to end the era of racketeering within its operations.

The new Nigeria High Commissioner to United Kingdom, Ambassador Sarafa Tunji Isola seems to have begun the weeding exercise to rid the commission of bad eggs that have been tormenting the public through several invidious devices, including passport fraudsters, who have been duping many unsuspecting Nigerians.

For starters, the Mission, said it discovered that, 18 innocent Nigerians paid between £200 and £350 to racketeers in their desire to urgently acquire or renew Nigerian Passports.

In a statement, the Mission said upon assumption of duties in the first week of May, the new helmsman, was said to have held series of strategic meetings, including engaging the immigration section, to brainstorm on the best way to address the incessant allegations of corruption and other negative reports on the issuance of the Nigerian passport in London, as well as to restore the Mission’s credibility in the process.

This led to the breaking of a gang of passport racketeers, after it was discovered that 18 innocent Nigerians paid between £200 and £350 to racketeers, who issued them with forged documents with a promise to assist the applicants through a “non-existent Abuja list” in the Mission.

While sympathising with past victims, the Mission admonished Nigerians, men and women to always avail themselves with official channels for assistance on compassionate grounds and desist from patronising unofficial agents/touts.

It appealed to applicants to be patient, as it endeavoured to deliver on its mandate to all Nigerians in the UK, adding that it had reviewed its activities during this period and acknowledges the need to attend to Nigerians who have urgent reasons to renew their Passports.

“In this regard, the Mission would resume the Fast-Track Services in line with global best practices. Furthermore, to curb touting and racketeering, the following measures has been put in place: i. Continuous processing of applications and dates of appointments in line with the current practice.
