A tragic incident in Lagos has left students and residents in shock after a National Diploma II student of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) was killed by a stray bullet during a military operation.
The student, Balogun Sultan, who was enrolled in the institution’s distance learning programme, had just completed his Research Methods examination on Tuesday and was heading home.
According to classmates, students in the programme only come to campus occasionally for lectures and exams before returning to their homes.
After leaving campus, Sultan boarded a vehicle at the WAEC bus stop heading toward Lagos Island, where he lived.
Witnesses said soldiers had been deployed to the area following reports of a possible cult clash. During the operation, gunshots were fired and Sultan was allegedly struck by a stray bullet while passing through the area.
Videos circulating online show residents running for safety amid the sound of gunfire.
Bystanders rushed to help the injured student, applying pressure to his wounds before he was taken to the Military Hospital Yaba.
Despite undergoing emergency surgery, he was sadly pronounced dead.
Friends described Sultan as quiet, disciplined, and focused, a young man who avoided trouble and was determined to complete his education.
His sudden death has left students mourning and questioning how a young man simply returning home after an exam could lose his life.
He went to school to write an exam… but never made it back home.
