Peter Mbah, Governor of Enugu State

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has concluded plans to defect from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), according to Premium Times.

The paper quoted sources familiar with the governor’s plan as saying that Mbah has consulted widely with political associates and leaders in Enugu in recent weeks before considering the move.

Former governors Chimaroke Nnamani and Sullivan Chime, as well as a former Senate President, Ken Nnamani, who are APC members, played significant roles in persuading Mbah to join the ruling party.

The governor’s decision to quit his party is said to have been informed by the lingering crisis in the PDP and the opposition party’s unfair treatment to the South-East region.

But political watchers believe President Bola Tinubu is partly or wholly responsible for Mbah’s decision to join the APC. Mbah is one of the PDP governors who are close to President Tinubu and his wife, Remi.

Mbah recently hailed Tinubu’s bold and tough initiatives targeted, according to him, at transforming Nigeria. He made the commendation when Mohammed Idris, minister of Information and National Orientation, paid him a courtesy visit at the Enugu Government House in August.

The PDP has lost steam as an opposition party, with two of its former governors defecting to the ruling APC recently.

Governors Sheriff Oborevwori and Umo Eno of Akwa-Ibom State recently defected to the APC with their supporters, casting doubt on the opposition party’s chances in 2027 general elections. A numbers of lawmakers have exited the party

PDP was in the saddle between 1999 and 2015, producing three Nigerian presidents within the 16-year period.
