Barely two months after, the first person ever to receive a heart transplant from a genetically modified pig has died.

The University of Maryland Medical System that carried out the surgery in the US, disclosed on Wednesday, saying

The 57-year-old David Bennett, had received his transplant on January 7, 2022, and passed away on March 8.

Bartley Griffith, the lead surgeon said: “His condition began deteriorating several days ago. After it became clear that he would not recover, he was given compassionate palliative care. He was able to communicate with his family during his final hours.

“He proved to be a brave and noble patient who fought all the way to the end. We extend our sincerest condolences to his family.”
