Mrs.-Funke-Olakunrin-Nee-Fasoranti

Late Mrs. Funke Olakunrin (Nee Fasoranti)

The trial of the suspected killers of Mrs Funke Olakunri, daughter of the leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, Chief Reuben Fasoranti, resumed on Tuesday at the State High Court, Akure, as the court accepted the report of a pathologist on the cause of her death.

A consultant pathologist, Dr Olumuyiwa Pelemo, told the court that a gunshot from one of the assailants killed the deceased, adding that she lost a lot of blood.

Olakunri was killed along Benin-Ore-Shagamu Expressway on June 20, 2019.

Four suspects, including Awalu Abubakar (25), Muhammed Shehu (26), Mazaje Lawal (40), and Adamu Adamu (60), were arraigned on a three-count charge of conspiracy to kill, murder, and kidnapping.

The report tendered by the prosecution team led by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Charles Titiloye, revealed that the gunshot led to excessive loss of blood which led to multiple organ failure of the deceased.

The pathologist, Dr Pelemo, who conducted the autopsy told the court that examination showed a single entrance and exit of the gunshot wound on the right breast of the late Olakunrin.

Pelemo testified that internal examinations revealed “lacerations of the blood vessels resulting into illness of internal organs which is as a result of the gunshot,” saying the deceased died as a result of excessive blood loss due to the gunshot injury.

One of the defence counsel, Obafemi Bawa, objected to the admissibility of the autopsy report.

However, Justice Williams Olamide admitted the autopsy report as evidence and adjourned the case till January 19, 2022, for further hearing.
