The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has expressed sorrow over the death of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, describing his passing as a great loss to the region and the continent at large.

In a statement issued from its headquarters in Abuja, Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, conveyed the community’s condolences to President Bola Tinubu, the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the bereaved Buhari family, and the entire Nigerian people.

Touray praised Buhari’s unwavering commitment to democratic governance, stability, and regional cooperation during his years in office.

He noted that Buhari’s contributions had a lasting impact not only on Nigeria but also on the collective aspirations of West Africa for peace, unity, and development.

“ECOWAS salutes the memory of this distinguished statesman, whose invaluable contributions greatly advanced democracy and regional integration in West Africa and across the African continent,” the statement read.

The regional body offered prayers for the repose of his soul, stating: “May his soul rest in paradise.”

Buhari served as Nigeria’s military ruler from 1983 to 1985 and returned as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023.
