The Canadian government has updated its United States travel advisory, warning citizens to expect thorough checks by border authorities.

The ‘information on scrutiny at border points’ reminded travelers that every country decides who can enter or exit through its borders.

“The Government of Canada cannot intervene on your behalf if you do not meet entry or exit requirements for the United States,” it reads.

The update said border agents have significant discretion in making a decision to allow or reject entry, and strictly enforce the requirements.

“Expect scrutiny at ports of entry, including of electronic devices,” the advice noted. “Comply and be forthcoming in all interactions with border authorities.”

The statement said anyone denied entry could be detained while awaiting deportation, adding that different rules may apply when traveling with a temporary passport or an emergency travel document.

The update also provided precautions on crime, criminal strategies, gun violence, home break-ins, hiking, demonstrations, fraud, and terrorism.

The U.S. government had announced that from April 11, foreign nationals visiting for periods longer than 30 days must register or face potential penalties, fines, or misdemeanor prosecution.

The requirement, however, applies to those entering America through land borders, as those flying in by air are mostly required to complete the I-94 admission form.
