Hours after award-winning writer, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, publicly accused Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital, Lagos, of lapses in the circumstances surrounding her son’s death, a Lagos businessman, Akin Olaoye, has levelled fresh allegations against a private medical facility in Ibadan.
Olaoye, who posts on X under the handle @akintollgate, alleged that Redeemer’s Health Centre, Ibadan, was responsible for the death of his sister-in-law, Mrs Oladunni Grace Otitoju, the 63-year-old wife of a former Ekiti State commissioner, following what he described as a routine blood sample collection that developed complications.
In a detailed post that has continued to gain traction on X, Olaoye claimed that Mrs Otitoju, founder of Lekki Farms, visited the Ibadan clinic on November 19, 2025 for laboratory tests.
He alleged that complications arose during the blood sample collection process, resulting in excessive bleeding and a rapid deterioration in her condition.
According to him, the bleeding was so severe that her clothing became soaked with blood and was later discarded by cleaners at the facility.
He further alleged that she collapsed during the procedure, after which her condition continued to worsen.
Olaoye said Mrs Otitoju was later transferred by ambulance to Oyemesi Specialist Hospital, Orogun, Ibadan, where she was admitted into the intensive care unit in the early hours of November 21, 2025.
He claimed that by the time she arrived at the second hospital, her condition had deteriorated beyond recovery. She was later pronounced dead.
The deceased’s husband, Kayode Otitoju, a former commissioner for information in Ekiti State, is reportedly considering legal action.
Medical professionals have, however, urged restraint, warning against drawing conclusions in the absence of verified clinical findings.
Several doctors on X said it is highly uncommon for a routine blood sample collection, when properly conducted, to directly lead to fatal outcomes.
They explained that venipuncture is among the most frequently performed medical procedures globally and typically carries minimal risk.
Some clinicians suggested that underlying medical conditions, including bleeding disorders, vascular fragility, reactions to medication, or other systemic illnesses, could have contributed to the outcome.
Others stressed that without access to hospital records, laboratory reports, imaging results, and a post-mortem examination, it would be medically inappropriate to assign responsibility or determine causation.
The timing of Olaoye’s allegations, coming within hours of Adichie’s confirmation of her own claims against Euracare, has heightened public debate about transparency and regulation of private healthcare facilities, with many Nigerians drawing parallels between both cases.
The claims reported are allegations based on personal accounts shared on social media. They have not been independently verified, and no official medical report, coroner’s findings, or court ruling has been released. All institutions mentioned are entitled to respond, and responsibility cannot be conclusively established without a formal investigation.
As of the time of filing this report, Redeemer’s Health Centre has not issued a public statement.0
