Arsenal ace Bukayo Saka has opened up on the pain he feels in response to the Gunners’ recent title capitulation while in conversation with club legend Ian Wright.
The pair were talking as part of an interview to celebrate Saka committing his long-term future to Arsenal by penning a contract extension that sees the 21-year-old tied to the Emirates until the summer of 2027. The winger has played an integral role in what was a stellar season for the Gunners, though they fell just short in the race for the title.
Without a Premier League title to their name since 2004, Mikel Arteta’s side ran Manchester City close but in the end, did not have enough in the tank to dethrone Pep Guardiola’s well-oiled winning machine.
Saka has shed light on the emotions he has gone through since City’s status as champions for another year was confirmed as he told Wright: “Obviously, speaking about this season, it hurts a lot, it really hurts so much to even think about how we’ve ended this season and what could have been.”
The England international remains the only player in the English top flight this season to hit double figures in terms of both league goals and assists. Alongside fellow young talents like Gabriel Martinelli, William Saliba and captain Martin Odegaard, the future looks bright for Arsenal.
Saka said as much, as he added: “One thing I can say is, since the last two or three years I’ve been playing, I’ve seen this team and club grow in the right direction.
“One thing the club, the fans can be excited about is that obviously, we are going in the right direction if you look at the last two or three years. I think when the dust settles and all the negative emotions are out, I think everyone can look at us and be excited about the future.”
In the aftermath of Saka’s contract extension, Arteta waxed lyrical over the wide-man for his ability on the pitch and conduct off it.
“As well as being a fantastic talent, Bukayo is a special person, he’s loved by us all and he is a credit to himself and his family for the hard work and commitment they have all made to get to this level today,” the Arsenal boss explained.
“Together with our supporters, we’re so looking forward to enjoying Bukayo’s continued development with us in the years to come.”
Saka has one final chance to add to his tally during Arsenal’s final home game this coming Sunday when the Gunners welcome Wolves to the Emirates.
