The management of the Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, has denied claims by former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, that two students died during the school’s student union government (SUG) election held last weekend.

Obi had on Monday posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account that two students were killed and several others injured following violence that erupted during the election.

Reacting in a statement on Tuesday, the institution’s Director of Public Relations, Mrs. Angela Egele, described Obi’s claim as false and misleading. She said no student died or sustained gunshot wounds during the election.

According to her, security personnel including the Nigerian Army, Police, Civil Defence Corps, State Security Service, Mobile Police, and local vigilantes were on ground to maintain order throughout the exercise.

Egele confirmed that while the election was disrupted and declared inconclusive due to ballot box snatching and violence by suspected thugs, there was no record of fatalities or gunfire injuries.

She urged the public to disregard Obi’s statement and assured parents and stakeholders that the polytechnic remains safe and secure.

The student election has since been suspended, and the management says it is working with security agencies to investigate the incident and ensure accountability.
