Arsenal’s next five Premier League fixtures compared to Man City and Liverpool after Brentford win

Arsenal are top of the Premier League. For the first time in 2024, Mikel Arteta’s men are at the summit. They didn’t get there the easy way.

Kai Havertz’s late winner over Brentford had more than a touch of Reiss Nelson vs Bournemouth about it. The emotional rollercoaster during the game had similar peaks and troughs.

Ahead of Manchester City and Liverpool battling it out in the headline fixture of the weekend, Arsenal did their bit. Battling the emotions that came with Aaron Ramsdale’s horror mistake right on half time to level the match against the run of play, the Gunners had to dig mightily deep for this.

Declan Rice’s opener felt like it came weeks earlier by the time full-time was signalled at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, but after dominant victories and a procession of goals in recent matches, battling through to three points in north London will be even sweeter.

As Arsenal proved their credentials once more, and in a totally different way, here’s how the next five fixtures stack up with the rest of the top three.

Manchester City (A) – Sunday, March 31

Hardly the ideal game first up after the international break, but Arsenal will be looking to do the double over the reigning champions when they meet at the Etihad Stadium in three weeks time. Having fallen short by five points last year whilst losing both fixtures against City, Arteta knows more than most just how important the games against those at the top are.

Luton Town (H) – Wednesday, April 3

From one extreme to another. Arsenal kick-off April with a home fixture against Rob Edwards’ Luton. Although the table suggests a comfortable home win, the stakes make for increased attention being placed on this game.

Luton are currently just three points from breaking out of the relegation zone and are keeping in touch with Nottingham Forest and Everton. With a game in hand over the Toffees there is still a three-way battle going on to avoid joining Burnley and Sheffield United in the Championship next season.

The late 4-3 win over Luton earlier this season has already shown just how stubborn the league’s biggest underdogs can be.

Brighton (A) – Saturday, April 6

Completing three games in a week is a tough test. Brighton are one of the leakiest sides in the division and are the opposite to Arsenal in terms of defensive results, but still have the threat to make this a hard ask.

Arsenal outplayed the Seagulls in the reverse fixture and will be favourites to do so again on the south coast. Roberto De Zerbi’s side remain tricky customers though.

Aston Villa (H) – Saturday, April 13

Should they progress to the Champions League quarter-finals, this game will come just days after the first leg of that. The second leg will sandwich a home clash with Aston Villa and Unai Emery’s return to the Emirates Stadium once again.

Villa are fighting for their own place in Europe’s premier club competition and won’t be laying down in north London. Arteta will be out to get revenge after losing the trip to the Midlands in December.

Wolves (A) – Saturday – April 20

Finishing off a run of games full of banana skins is Wolves. They have already beaten Manchester City, Tottenham, and Chelsea at Molineux this season and will be planning on pushing Arsenal as close as possible.

The recent injuries to Pedro Neto and Matheus Cunha have lessened Wolves’ danger heading into the final 10 games of the campaign, but Gary O’Neil’s side have been one of the surprise packages. Certainly one to be wary of.
