Brigade Commander of Damboa, General Uba, has been confirmed dead after falling into the hands of Islamic State West Africa Province terrorists, despite earlier assurances from the Nigerian Army that he had safely returned to base.

According to military sources, the senior officer, who was initially declared missing, had recorded a short video indicating he was unharmed. According to them, the footage was taken before his situation deteriorated.

“He was okay when that video was made,” one source said, adding that the commander later became disoriented while attempting to navigate his way through the forest.

Ground troops and air assets reportedly made repeated efforts to locate and rescue him. At some point, General Uba informed troops that he was already heading back to base, a message that briefly raised hopes of a swift recovery.

However, following widespread reports of his abduction, he was said to have been re-captured by ISWAP fighters. His death was confirmed hours later.

The development has again put the military hierarchy under scrutiny, especially after the Army earlier announced that the commander had safely returned.
