Hackers have hijacked digital billboards in Egypt, Malaysia and Brazil, displaying sexually explicit videos on public screens and prompting authorities to shut down affected displays and launch investigations.

The incident, which occurred on Thursday, caused a stir in Giza, Egypt, where motorists stopped along one of Cairo’s busiest highways to film a giant billboard showing the explicit footage.

Similar attacks were reported in Malaysia and Brazil, while claims of related incidents also emerged from Iraq and China.

A Telegram group identified as Leakers$ claimed responsibility for the attacks, saying it exploited a vulnerability in software used to transmit content to LED screens.

The group claimed it discovered thousands of unprotected digital display systems during a two-hour scan, suggesting that the screens could be accessed without sophisticated hacking skills.

It reportedly said “anyone with two brain cells” could have carried out the intrusion.

Authorities in Malaysia and Brazil shut down affected billboards and opened investigations into the breaches.

Egypt’s Interior Ministry also confirmed that legal proceedings had commenced over the incident.

The group said it was not seeking ransom, although it did not provide further details about its motive.

The incidents have raised concerns about the security of digital advertising infrastructure and the vulnerability of publicly accessible display systems to cyberattacks.
