Ogun State Police Command is investigating a mother of six, Igbagbo Erobe, allegedly murdered and burnt in her father’s house at Igbo Edu, Abigi, Ogun Waterside LGA on October 18, 2026.

Her estranged lover, 56-year-old Madarikan Emehinola from Igbokoda, Ondo State, has been arrested.

Police allege Emehinola stormed the house around 1am with a five-litre keg of petrol, killed the woman and set the house ablaze because she left him for another man after about two years together.

The deceased had returned to her father’s house after separation.

Witnesses said two residents saw him fleeing with the keg while the house was on fire, raised alarm and alerted family and security operatives.

“He was arrested with the remaining petrol in the keg and handed over to the police at Abigi Police Station,” a source at the State Criminal Investigation Department said. Bloodstains were also allegedly found on the keg.

The source said: “There was a woman named Igbagbo Erobe… The woman and the suspect, Madarikan Emehinola, were lovers for about two years. Early this year, the woman abandoned him and started a new relationship with another man.”

But Emehinola denied the crime, saying he stopped visiting Igbo Edu since June after the woman and a friend warned him she now had a new husband.

“Since that day, I made up my mind that I would not go there again, and I have not gone there. I was surprised when I was accused of going to Igbo Edu to set her father’s house on fire,” he said.

He claimed he was arrested at Obi Market at about 3am while heading to sell cassava, fishing nets and firewood, and that the keg was to buy fuel for his engine boat.

“I wanted to use the keg to buy petrol for my engine boat after selling at the market. I did not know that my father-in-law’s house had been burnt until I was arrested,” he said.

Police spokesman DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi said investigation is ongoing and condemned the act, assuring that under Commissioner Olubode Ojajuni, justice would be served.
