The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, says its Device Checker Platform does not track users or access personal data, including messages, photos, contacts or financial information.
The clarification was given by the Executive Vice Chairman, Dr. Aminu Maida, at a media briefing in Lagos on Thursday, October 29, 2026.
Maida, who was represented by the Zonal Controller, NCC Lagos Zonal Office, Mr. Tunji Jimoh, said the platform is solely for device identification and confirmation of regulatory compliance.

He explained that the initiative is aimed at enforcing Type Approval standards, protecting consumers from substandard devices and ensuring only approved communications equipment operates on Nigerian networks.
“As Nigeria’s digital economy continues to expand, it is important that devices connected to our networks comply with established technical and regulatory standards,” Jimoh said on behalf of the EVC.
He noted that the Device Checker will help curb the circulation of counterfeit, cloned and unauthorised devices.
On progress made so far, Maida disclosed that the Commission has streamlined its licensing and regularisation process, which has enabled many device dealers in Kano State to obtain licences.
He added that sensitisation engagements have been held with importers and other stakeholders in Lagos and other states to raise awareness on Type Approval and Device Checker requirements, improving accountability across the supply chain.
The NCC has also introduced a Device Checker app that allows authorised dealers and stakeholders to scan device IMEIs and upload details directly to the platform.
Consumers are advised to verify devices before purchase via http://www.ncc.gov.ng/devicechecker, while manufacturers, importers and dealers can access the Type Approval & Device Verification Guide on the Commission’s website. The app is available at http://imeiscanner.registermydevice.ng.
The Commission urged consumers to buy from reputable licensed dealers and to use its 315 toll-free line for enquiries and complaints, reiterating its commitment to consumer protection, fair competition and network integrity.
