The Kuje Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory has set up a committee to regulate scrap collection centres, evacuate abandoned scrap materials and strengthen environmental sanitation and security across the council.

The council chairman, Danjuma Samuel Shekwolo, inaugurated the committee with a mandate to identify and regulate scrap collection points, enforce environmental regulations and maintain a database of legitimate scrap operators.

Shekwolo said the initiative was aimed at restoring environmental order, improving security and protecting residents’ well-being.

He urged committee members to discharge their responsibilities with fairness, transparency and inclusiveness, while adopting a humane approach in dealing with scrap operators.

The chairman also directed the Market Management Committee to address multiple taxation, poor sanitation, illegal stalls, revenue leakages, security concerns and irregular shop allocations across markets in the council.

He stressed the need to treat traders with dignity and involve them in decisions affecting their businesses.

According to him, his administration’s development agenda is focused on creating a clean, organised and secure environment where residents, traders, women, youths and non-indigenes can thrive.

Shekwolo called on both committees to work closely with relevant stakeholders and the council administration to achieve their respective mandates.

He directed the Scrap Committee to submit an interim report within three weeks.

The chairman said the initiatives reflected his administration’s commitment to people-oriented governance and inclusive development across Kuje Area Council.
