UCH Ibadan Ranked Nigeria’s Best Health Institution in 2026 SCImago Rankings

Premier teaching hospital places 7,051st globally, leads country’s thin showing on world health list

The University College Hospital, UCH, Ibadan, has emerged as Nigeria’s top-ranked health institution in the 2026 SCImago Institutions Rankings, placing 7,051st worldwide and in the first quartile of the global health-sector table.

The Spanish-based ranking, which evaluates universities, hospitals and research centres, scored institutions on 20 indicators across three weighted dimensions: research performance (50%), innovation output (30%) and societal impact (20%).

UCH finished more than 1,300 places ahead of its closest Nigerian rival, the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research, NIMR, Lagos, which came in at 8,383rd globally.

Only six Nigerian health institutions made the 2026 health-sector list.

They are:

Five of the six are federal teaching hospitals. State hospitals, federal medical centres and private providers were absent from the ranking.

The research component carries the heaviest weight and accounts for half of each institution’s score. It measures publication output, citation impact, presence in top-quartile journals, international collaboration and open-access share.

Innovation, weighted at 30%, tracks patents and technological impact. Societal impact, at 20%, covers web visibility, media mentions, contributions to UN Sustainable Development Goals and influence on public policy.

The Chief Medical Director of UCH, Prof. Jesse Abiodun Otegbayo, described the ranking as “a collective achievement due to the contributions of all our committed and dedicated staff who toil day and night to keep services going in spite of the challenges and the difficult work terrain.”

He said the recognition would serve as motivation for staff of the nation’s premier tertiary health facility, and thanked the Federal Government for giving priority to the health sector.

“With improved funding, provision of stable electricity and other infrastructural facilities, as well as improved workers’ remuneration, we can do even more,” Prof. Otegbayo said.

“I celebrate this ranking on behalf and over the shoulders of our greatest assets, our staff, as it perfectly aligns with the mantra of the current administration of Shared Vision for Excellence.”

—Nigeria’s Global Footprint Remains Thin—

Founded on 20 November 1957 as Nigeria’s first teaching hospital, UCH is affiliated with the University of Ibadan’s College of Medicine and serves as the main referral centre for the Southwest. It is also one of eight federally funded Cancer Centres of Excellence.

The hospital has been pushing to strengthen research. In October 2024, the CMD awarded grants to six staff researchers to boost internal research output.

The ranking also spotlighted individual excellence. A University of Ibadan clinician-researcher, Prof. Godwin Ogbole, this year became the first indigenous African Senior Fellow of the world’s leading MRI society.

However, the SCImago list highlights Nigeria’s limited global research footprint. Only six health institutions made the cut, compared to deeper representation from Egypt, South Africa and Kenya. The Kenya Medical Research Institute leads the continent’s health-sector table.

SCImago, which also produces the Scopus-powered Journal & Country Rank, says its indicators are fully auditable and designed to let institutions benchmark performance in research, innovation and societal impact.

For UCH, the 2026 result reaffirms its position as Nigeria’s flagship teaching hospital — even as it underscores the urgent need to expand research capacity across the country’s wider health system.

The Conclave
