Security Operatives Take Over NFF Secretariat Ahead of FIFA Meeting

The headquarters of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) in Abuja was on Monday placed under heavy security surveillance as operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force took over the premises ahead of a high-level stakeholders’ meeting involving officials of the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA).

The unusual security presence heightened tension around the NFF secretariat, with more than 20 armed operatives strategically stationed at different points within and around the complex.

The security personnel, who arrived in several official vehicles, subjected visitors and stakeholders to rigorous screening at the entrance, allowing only a limited number of persons into the premises.

Several others, including journalists, were reportedly denied access to the secretariat.

A correspondent who attempted to enter the complex was stopped by the security operatives, who cited an ongoing high-level management meeting as the reason for restricting access.

The operatives also reportedly told journalists that they had received directives from “above” not to allow members of the press into the secretariat or permit them to operate within the premises.

The heavy security deployment came ahead of a stakeholders’ meeting scheduled for Monday night in Abuja with a delegation from FIFA, the world football governing body.

The development has further heightened attention around the NFF, particularly as FIFA officials arrived in Nigeria on Sunday night for the crucial engagement.

Sources said the visiting FIFA delegation was received at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, by a combined team of security operatives, who subsequently escorted the officials from the airport.

Earlier on Monday, an official vehicle from the State House was also seen at the NFF secretariat.

The vehicle, identified by its official number plate, reportedly delivered files containing documents to the federation ahead of the management meeting.

As of press time, the specific reasons for the unusually heavy security presence and the restriction of journalists from the NFF premises had not been officially disclosed.

The development, however, has generated considerable interest among football stakeholders, with the FIFA delegation expected to engage relevant Nigerian football authorities and stakeholders during its visit.
