Dangote IPO: Africa’s Largest, and Why It Matters to You, By Bamidele Ademola-Olateju

For decades, we have watched our oil leave our shores as crude and return to us as fuel we pay foreign refiners to make. Now, for the first time, we are being asked not merely to buy fuel, but to own the refinery that makes it.

What is an IPO, in plain terms
An Initial Public Offering is simply a company opening its doors and selling small pieces of itself, called shares, to the public. Instead of remaining the property of one man or a handful of banks, ownership is spread among thousands, even millions, of everyday people. When the company profits, shareholders profit with it.

What is on offer

  • Dangote Petroleum Refinery – Africa’s largest, and among the largest single-train refineries in the world, is opening itself to public ownership.
  • Shares are priced at ₦525 each, with a minimum purchase of just 10 shares, meaning ordinary Nigerians, and Africans in the diaspora, can begin building a stake for the cost of a meal.
  • The offer runs from September 14 to October 13, 2026, with listing on the Nigerian Exchange expected by November.
  • Dividends will be paid in US dollars, a deliberate shield for shareholders against the naira’s volatility.
  • Proceeds will fund an expansion that could make this the largest single-train refinery on earth by 2028.

Why it matters
This is not merely a financial transaction. It is a question of who owns Africa’s strategic assets, foreign capital, or African hands. When a fisherman in Walvis Bay, a trader in Lagos, and a nurse in London can each hold a piece of the same refinery, ownership stops being an abstraction reserved for the few. It becomes a shared inheritance. We have spent a generation as consumers of what others refine from our own resources. This is an invitation, however modest the entry point, to become owners instead. Whether or not we take it, the invitation itself marks a shift worth understanding.

Note: This is for educational purposes only, not a financial advice. I was not paid to write this.
