Music lovers have been thrown into mourning globally following the death of Dolly Parton, the US singer widely regarded as the “queen of country music”, at the age of 80.

Bryan Seaver, Parton’s nephew, announced her death but did not reveal the cause. Her death comes months after she cancelled a series of Las Vegas concerts due to ongoing health concerns.

The legendary singer drew early musical influence from her mother’s folk songs and her aunt, who played guitar and wrote songs. She started singing at the age of six in the local church where her grandfather was the pastor.

Parton released her debut album ‘Hello, I’m Dolly’ in 1967, beginning a career that spanned nearly six decades, produced 49 albums, saw her write at least 3,000 songs and deliver numerous hits.

With classics including ‘Jolene’, ‘Coat of Many Colors’, ‘I Will Always Love You’ and ‘9 to 5’, Parton became one of the best-selling female artistes of all time, selling more than 100 million records.

She won 11 Grammy Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award, three Emmy Awards and a Tony Award, among other honours.
