UK councillor, Glenn Gibbins, has been charged by British authorities over an offensive social media post in which he suggested that Nigerians should be “melted down and fill in the potholes.”
The controversial post, originally made before his election, resurfaced after he became a councillor, triggering widespread outrage across the United Kingdom and among Nigerians. Following an investigation, prosecutors charged Gibbins with sending a grossly offensive message through a public communications network.
The case has attracted significant political attention because Gibbins was elected only months before the post became public. Reform UK suspended him shortly after the comments emerged, distancing the party from the remarks.
