Professor Jason Arday, the youngest Black academic ever appointed at the University of Cambridge, has died at the age of 41. He was found “unresponsive” at an address in Battersea, south London, on Friday afternoon.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed that officers were called by the London Ambulance Service at 3.12pm on Friday. Arday was pronounced dead at the scene.

A police spokesman said: “Sadly, a 41-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. His next-of-kin have been informed and are being supported by officers.”

The Met added that his death is being treated as “unexpected, but is not believed to be suspicious.” The case is being investigated by officers from the Met’s Central South Command Unit, and a file will be prepared for the coroner.

Arday’s death comes just days after he resigned as Professor of Sociology of Education at the University of Cambridge on August 5, 2026, following accusations of plagiarism in his academic work.

He made history in 2023 when he was appointed to Cambridge, becoming the university’s youngest ever Black professor. His appointment was widely celebrated as a milestone for diversity in British academia.

In recent weeks, Arday had been at the center of controversy after questions were raised about several of his publications and public claims. The plagiarism allegations triggered intense scrutiny across UK universities and on social media.

In his resignation statement, Arday did not admit to misconduct but said he was stepping down to protect the university and to address the issues raised “with integrity.” Colleagues described him as brilliant but under immense pressure.

Tributes have begun pouring in from students and academics who said Arday inspired a generation of young Black scholars. Others noted the toll that public scrutiny and academic politics can take on even the most promising minds.
