Michelle Alozie was pulled for a drug test following the Super Falcons of Nigeria’s 1-0 win over Zambia in their second Group C match at the ongoing women’s Africa Cup of Nations WAFCON 2026 on Saturday.
The 29-year-old confirmed to journalists after the match that she undertook the mandatory random testing for doping to reporters after taking the drug test.
Alozie had played all 90 minutes and was voted woman of the match for her stellar defensive contributions and all-round energy that ensured the ten-player Super Falcons did not concede despite playing over 50 minutes of the crunch match without Blessing Demehin, who was shown a red card for denying Barbara Banda an obvious goalscoring opportunity.
The Chicago Stars defender started at right back but was switched to left back in a tactical reshuffle. She made multiple interceptions and clearances that ensured Zambia only had two shots on target to keep Nigeria’s knockout round qualification hopes alive.
Despite taking the test that saw her leave the stadium long after her teammates, Alozie declined taking credit for the win and praised the team for raising their performance after the shock 3-2 defeat to Malawi.
“Yes, that [the drug testing] is true,“ she started, “but I don’t really know if I really deserve the man of the match [award].
“I think it was really a team effort, and we really came out on top today,” Alozie added.
Nigeria face Egypt in the final Group C match on August 5, where victory will ensure the team’s quarter-final qualification.
